Infertility, The Curse and God’s Sovereignty

Yesterday I wrote about how there were multiple women in the bible who struggled with infertility – specifically Sarah, Rebekah and Rachel. When thinking about suffering, I often forget that *this isn’t the way it was supposed to be.*

When Adam and Eve were created, they lived in perfect unity with God – there was no sin, no sorrow, no suffering. When they committed that first sin, there were consequences. They broke that perfect communion with our Creator and brought sin and sickness and death into creation. What came with that? The curse. Here’s the second part of it:

To the woman he said,

“I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing;
in pain you shall bring forth children.
Your desire shall be for your husband,
and he shall rule over you.” Gen 3:16

When discussing this, most people take the “pain in childbearing” to mean physical pain in delivering a child. This is a part of it, but “bringing forth children” entails the whole process – and the difficulties that can come with that like infertility, miscarriage, stillbirth, physical disabilities, difficulties in delivery that result in paralysis, pain or even death. All intense suffering in different ways, all a result of sin.
I was talking to a friend the other day about yesterday’s post and three generations of infertility – she noted how interesting it is that the curse and the effects of sin so quickly infiltrated every aspect. It’s a hard dichotomy, one that I honesty don’t fully understand, how God is completely sovereign over all and yet in this world sin still functionally rules and reigns.
And so suffering is multi factored. God is sovereign and completely in control of your situation. Out of his Fatherly love He gives and takes away. In His intense love and Fatherly affection, He cares deeply, deeply for us in suffering. He weeps with us. He loves us and knows this is not the way it was supposed to be. Is it out of His control? No way. Is it the way He had intended? No.
Although confusing, know that God is with you. He is trustworthy and no matter what you are going through you can trust Him! Look to his evidences of grace in the past. And know this is not the way it was supposed to be. One day, ALL will be made right! Praise God! Let him comfort you where you are now and look with HOPE – assurance – that one day all will be made right, one day Satan will be vanquished and King Jesus will rule and reign in complete victory!!
