Homemade Staples #1 – Taco Seasoning Mix

I’ve been wanting to make my own seasoning mixes for a while. Pinterest seems to whet my appetite to add more homemade into my life:) Making your own seasoning mixes is pretty much a win-win. You can adapt the seasonings for your liking so it tastes better, you know exactly what’s in there and it’s probably cheaper in the long run. Once I bought the ingredients, it took about 5 minutes to throw it all together. One evening I took an hour and made this, ranch dressing, italian dressing and onion soup mix (to be shared later!)

First up? Taco seasoning!! I made a large portion of it and kicked up the heat. It’s not super spicy, but you can lessen the red chili pepper if you can’t handle the heat :)

Use this in anything – be creative!!

Homemade Taco Seasoning Mix

Slightly adapted from Self Reliance, originally from Heavenly Homemakers

  • 1 1/2 c. chili powder
  • 3/4 c. onion powder
  • 1/3 c. cumin
  • 1/4 c. garlic powder
  • 1/4 c. paprika
  • 1/4 c. red chili pepper
  • 2 T. salt

Mix all together in a pint size mason jar or other airtight large jar. Stir or shake very well. Use 2-3 T. per serving. Continue to shake or mix before using. Keeps in a cool dark place (like your pantry) for months.
