Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body. Proverbs 16:24
Words are powerful. As I get older, the power of words has been revealed to me over and over. It seems like in high school and college harsh sarcasm and brash talk is the norm. And for some people this can continue for years or even a lifetime. Yet there’s some people we know who’s words seem gentle and loving. They’re the people you call when something hard is going on or who you hang out with when you need to be lifted up. We walk away encouraged when we spend time with these people. Is there anyone who comes to your mind as I mention this grace filled person? I know there are people in mine.
Our words can build up or they can tear down.
A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. Proverbs 15:1
Our words have weight, often more than we realize they do. And not only our words, but the tone of our voice and our body language can all say volumes. I know I’m guilty of saying a thousand things in my tone and body language that I would never say in my words and it’s so important to be aware of.
I want to encourage you to speak words of life to the people you love. Encourage them, admonish them, pray for them. Listen to them so you know how you can speak kindly to them. Love people deeply and share with them the things you love about them. If you’ve seen spiritual growth in a friend, share that with them! Point out in one another ways you’ve seen Jesus change them. It’s so easy to forget ways He’s changed us. Remind yourself and remind your friends about the gospel and God’s faithfulness. We all need people around us who speak words of life!
