Our sweet son is now officially, legally, always and forever part of our family. His name is legally changed to and they will issue a new birth certificate with our names on the parents line. In the eyes of the law- it is like we bore him ourselves.
Now as you may have guessed, this is a bit more of a formality. Bryan’s birth parents signed away their rights when he was 72 hours old. But technically Bryan was in the legal custody of the agency for the last 6 months. They did monthly visits and if they did have great concern over his safety or our competency they could have disrupted the placement and removed him. Obviously (and thankfully!!) they didn’t:) The finalization court date was the agency handing over custody and a judge making it all official!
This day was so special. We know we aren’t promised anything. We didn’t deserve children or a happy family. We were never promised Bryan would get to come home with us, that things would run smoothly, that he would get to live with us permanently. We aren’t even promised a tomorrow. But God has blessed us so richly and deeply. Every day with our son is a gift. God didn’t need to give so abundantly. He would still be good and loving and kind if he didn’t. But He did. He decided to reveal his greatness and power and might in Bryan’s little life, in his health, in his development and in as smooth an adoption that we could have dreamed. Every day is a gift. And we praise God continually for every one. We knew this day was coming but I’m still in awe. Thank you, thank you Jesus.
